10 Films to Watch for Your Girls’ Night Slover
Let's set the scene. You're with your best friends and every duvet, blanket, and quilt has been reassigned to your living room. While “little miss doesn’t know how to share” is hogging a pack of strawberry pencils, the rest of you, all packed like sardines on a single couch, go back and forth on what movies to watch.
While we’re all adults busy with our own lives, it’s always nice to get together once in a while to live vicariously through the lives of fictional characters, like when we were younger.
And so, in that spirit, I gift you a completely unbiased and thoughtfully curated list of movies to watch at a slumber party.
1. Ocean’s Eight
First on the roster is 'Ocean's Eight'. A fun, feel-good film where pretty women commit grand larceny and get away with it (we love that for them)...a true girlboss heist movie! This is also an excellent time to debate who in your friendship group is capable of committing any crime and getting away with it.
2. John Tucker Must Die
Next up is the revenge film of the century, John Tucker Must Die. While I'm sure we all know a John Tucker type – that is to say, a guy who wronged us that we wish we could get even with. For now, we'll just have to settle with our imaginations. Watching this movie is a bonding experience if you ask me.
3. Bring It On Franchise
Technically I'm cheating here by recommending a franchise, but the Bring It On films are just so good. Bring it On, Fight to the Finish, and All or Nothing are the ones to watch –– I strongly advise you to pretend the other films in the franchise don’t exist. The Bring It On movies are filled with unnecessary cheerleading lingo, back-stabbing, and questionable motives. Sign me up (not for actual cheerleading, though)!
4. Stick It
Now this next pick may be a bit on the niche side, but I can sincerely recommend the movie Stick It. What would you pick, juvie or gymnastics? I definitely wouldn't survive prison and I've already quit gymnastics, but that's just me. This is a movie about a rebellious teen finding her purpose and a new family – neither of which I found during my very short-lived gymnast era.
5. Aquamarine
Sticking with the found family trope, I bring you a film that shaped the minds of all wannabe mermaids, Aquamarine. This cinematic masterpiece is a heartfelt commentary on friendship, love and acceptance. What 10-year-old me would give to have a mermaid friend (I still can't believe my mum got rid of my DVD)!
6. The Princess Diaries
What type of slumber party/movie night would it be without watching The Princess Diaries? The people's princess, Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi: Princess of Genovia, taught us to be ourselves and take risks. So while abolishing the monarchy is on the agenda, Princess Mia and Queen Regent Clarisse can stay.
7. A Cinderella Story
What film says "I'm not like other girls" like A Cinderella Story? A true classic…no other Cinderella retelling holds a candle to this film. Any movie with Jennifer Coolidge and Chad Michael Murray is a film worth watching with your faves. We love a good underdog story.
8. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn)
On the more recent end, I present you with my personal favourite: Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) – or just Birds of Prey. The bad bitches of the DC comics universe are taking names (and lives), kicking ass in Gotham City and taking justice into their own hands. The 10/10 original soundtrack throughout is the icing on the cake and is more than a good enough reason to watch this movie.
9. Booksmart
Booksmart is a tale of two best friends determined to live their best lives after spending all of high school studying incessantly before going off to college. Full of high school shenanigans, typical teen drama, and an eccentric Billie Lourd. Consider this a formal request to add this to your watch list.
10. High School Musical 2
Last but not least, the sequel of all sequels, High School Musical 2. What's the point of this list if I didn't add the film that shaped a generation? Don't pass off the opportunity to annoy your neighbours, housemates or parents. Nobody is too good to sing Fabulous at the top of their lungs.
Honourable mentions: Bratz: The Movie, St Trinian’s, Easy A, and any Barbie movie before 2011, oh, and Shrek 2.
And there you have it, ten films to watch for your girls’ night slumber party!
