We’re all a part of a society where the lives of Black people continue to be blighted by structural racism, health disparities, lack of opportunity, and acts of violence and murder committed by police whose jobs are to protect. Long overdue, it’s time for our generation, particularly white and non-black people of color, to actively push back on the violation of Black lives with everything we have. For the allies at Pilot, this means utilizing every last drop of anger, frustration, and confusion, feeling it in its entirety, and weaving it into the fabric of how we will operate from here on out. Because for the Black victims of these oppressive systems, those feelings began long before many of us were attentive enough, and are accompanied with a level of fear that others can only attempt to comprehend. Moreover, they will demand to be felt non-stop as long as we continue to be complicit to the treatment our Black community faces. To our Black readers and artists, we stand with you. We honor your grief, pain, and trauma. Moreover, we want you to know that we are a safe space for you to voice your feelings at any time, through writing, visuals, poetry, or any other medium. We’re committed to listening, learning, and using our platform to elevate and amplify your voices. As a part of our plan to take concrete actions to support this fight, we have decided to create an ‘Activism’ section in our magazine. In reflecting more on the important relationship between art and social justice, we have additionally set up an art drive in which artists can harness their talents to ultimately help raise money for vital organizations that we’re supporting and will continue to support - namely Black Lives Matter, The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health). Learn more about these groups and other important resources in our compiled lists below.
